    Energy-Efficient Inference Accelerator for Memory-Augmented Neural Networks on an FPGA

    Memory-augmented neural networks (MANNs) are designed for question-answering tasks. It is difficult to run a MANN effectively on accelerators designed for other neural networks (NNs), in particular on mobile devices, because MANNs require recurrent data paths and various types of operations related to external memory access. We implement an accelerator for MANNs on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based on a data flow architecture. Inference times are also reduced by inference thresholding, which is a data-based maximum inner-product search specialized for natural language tasks. Measurements on the bAbI data show that the energy efficiency of the accelerator (FLOPS/kJ) was higher than that of an NVIDIA TITAN V GPU by a factor of about 125, increasing to 140 with inference thresholdingComment: Accepted to DATE 201

    Determinants of Turnover Intent in Higher Education: The Case of International and U.S. Faculty

    In spite of the increase in the number of the international academic workforce and their potential benefits, international status has been relatively under-studied in Public Management and Higher Education literature in comparison with studies of age, gender, and race. Given these realities, the present study identifies characteristics of internal and external variables that influence international and U.S. faculty turnover intentions in a large public South Eastern research university. To understand the variations in short-term and long-term turnover levels while controlling for various demographic, structural, and external variables, eight Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression analysis were performed using turnover intentions as the dependent variables. Distributive justice has the strongest negative effect on short-term turnover, and communication openness has the strongest negative effect on long-term turnover. After controlling for job satisfaction and organizational commitment, the effect of communication openness on short-term turnover and the effect of distributive justice on long-term turnover are not statistically significant. This suggests that communication openness and distributive justice might affect turnover through job satisfaction and/or organizational commitment. Job satisfaction has the strongest negative effect on short-term turnover and organizational commitment has the strongest negative effect on long-term turnover after controlling for internal and external variables. In addition, this study aims to analyze the differences in internal and external factors that impact faculty turnover by international status. In achieving this aim, international faculty were compared to the U.S. faculty on the afore-mentioned internal and external factors that were shown in the literature to impact turnover. The result shows that structural variables such as autonomy, communication openness, and procedural justice play a bigger part in how international faculty evaluate their career with the current university than it does for U.S. faculty. On the contrary, kinship ties and job opportunity have stronger effects on U.S. faculty turnover than international faculty turnover. The implications of this study and areas of future opportunities are discussed

    An Analysis on the Spatial Characteristics of Satisfaction on the Residential Environment Using Tweets

    The purpose of this study is to analyze the regional difference of spatial distribution of residential satisfaction by extracting the elements of residential satisfaction in the text of tweet data. We determined three themes such as “safety”, “amenity” and “convenience”, base search terms by theme. And we detailed the search terms by base search term in order to retrieve the tweets related to the satisfaction of residential environments. We analyzed the selected tweets and visualized the results of analysis on the map and then investigated the satisfaction of residential environments through the index analysis which was a proportion of tweet ratio of theme to whole tweet ratio by region This study shows that it may replace the offline survey method by the analysis of tweets on SNS in investigating the satisfaction of residential environments by regions in South Korea

    The Effect of Imbalanced Carrier Transport on the Efficiency Droop in GaInN-Based Blue and Green Light-Emitting Diodes

    The effect of strongly-imbalanced carrier concentration and mobility on efficiency droop is studied by comparing the onset voltage of high injection, the onset current density of the droop, and the magnitude of the droop, as well as their temperature dependence, of GaInN-based blue and green light-emitting diodes (LEDs). An n-to-p asymmetry factor is defined as sigma(n)/sigma(p), and was found to be 17.1 for blue LEDs and 50.1 for green LEDs. Green LEDs, when compared to blue LEDs, were shown to enter the high-injection regime at a lower voltage, which is attributed to their less favorable p-type transport characteristics. Green LEDs, with lower hole concentration and mobility, have a lower onset current density of the efficiency droop and a higher magnitude of the efficiency droop when compared to blue LEDs. The experimental results are in quantitative agreement with the imbalanced carrier transport causing the efficiency droop, thus providing guidance for alleviating the phenomenon of efficiency droop.114sciescopu

    Enhanced overall efficiency of GaInN-based light-emitting diodes with reduced efficiency droop by Al-composition-graded AlGaN/GaN superlattice electron blocking layer

    AlxGa1-xN/GaN superlattice electron blocking layers (EBLs) with gradually decreasing Al composition toward the p-type GaN layer are introduced to GaInN-based high-power light-emitting diodes (LEDs). GaInN/GaN multiple quantum well LEDs with 5- and 9-period Al-composition-graded AlxGa1-xN/GaN EBL show comparable operating voltage, higher efficiency as well as less efficiency droop than LEDs having conventional bulk AlGaN EBL, which is attributed to the superlattice doping effect, enhanced hole injection into the active region, and reduced potential drop in the EBL by grading Al compositions.
